When Does Ovulation Occur?

When does ovulation happen? This can be a very important concern if you are attempting to get pregnant.

Ovulation is when an egg is launched from a woman’s ovary to begin its way down the fallopian tubes to the uterus or womb…where it may be fertilized by sperm from a man.

Typically, only one egg is released in each menstrual cycle. A few women may release more than one egg at the same time. This is known as hyperovulation. It can lead to a pregnancy with fraternal (non-identical) twins. This is more prone to happen if there is a history of fraternal twins in the woman’s family.

Identical twins originate from the same fertilized egg, which splits in half to create two fetuses instead of just one. This is a arbitrary event that could happen to anybody. It doesn’t run in families.

When does ovulation occur in the woman’s menstrual cycle? Most people think it is 14 days following the first day of the last period but this is only accurate if the female has a regular 28 day cycle.

The truth is that ovulation is the first stage in the monthly cycle. The previous period has nothing to do with it, simply because that was the last cycle.

The menstrual cycle begins with ovulation. Then if the egg is not fertilized, it will leave the body. A woman may or may not notice this take place. Some women can feel ovulation as a negligible pain or ache in the womb. Others see a small spot of blood a couple of days after ovulation. That blood contains the egg that has left the body. Do not rely on this for contraception purposes, however. Blood spotting can happen for a lot of different reasons.

Then around 14 days after ovulation (or more precisely, 12 – 16 days) the lining of the womb, which thickens around the time of ovulation to prepare for a possible pregnancy, will detach and pass from the body together with surplus blood.

Therefore in the typical menstrual cycle of 28 days, ovulation will happen in the middle of the cycle, 14 days before the start of the next period and also 14 days following the start of the previous period.

However, if you have a long cycle, the time frame between the beginning of one period and the next ovulation is going to be more than 14 days. For example in a 32 day cycle, ovulation will still occur around 14 days before the start of the next period, but in this case that will be 18 days following the beginning of the previous period.

And for women who have a short cycle, the gap between the previous period and ovulation is going to be reduced. So for a 24 day cycle, ovulation will still take place around 14 days before the start of the next period, and only 10 days following the start of the previous period. So a woman with a short menstrual cycle may ovulate quickly after her period ends.

Provided that your cycle is regular, it is possible to figure out roughly when your ovulation occurs. You can figure out when your next period is due to begin and do the math from there. But if you do not have a regular cycle,so that you never know when your next period is due, you cannot predict ovulation in this manner.

This article is provided for information only and should not be used for contraception purposes. Knowing when ovulation happens may help some women to get pregnant, but it is not safe enough to be employed for avoiding pregnancy.
